...Because I can.

OK. So every now and then I like to take old concepts and try my hand at redrawing them with my current skill level. I think I've explained that. What you might not know is that I used to draw a TON of crappy fan art, like most people who illustrate my generation.

One of my most favorite series to draw was Sailor Moon.... And I loved Sailor Moon most of all.... Maybe a bit TOO much.

I decided at some point to do some mildly erotic art based on a lesser known character interaction. See, in the final season of Sailor Moon, Usagi (Serena) kind of almost cheats on her beloved Prince with a transgender sailor scout by the name of Sailor Star Fighter of the new Sailor Starlight infantry. For one reason or another, only when in Sailor form are they female. When in civilian mode, they happen to be popular pop musician guys.

So in a valiant attempt to garner as many deviantArt views as humanly possible, I created this abomination...

I know... it's pretty bad. (both concept wise and execution... Just silly).

That was in 2007. (which is a bit inexcusable but I'd recently been on a re-discovering Sailor Moon kick). NOW, in 2010 I've done it again. I didn't change anything about the concept or the composition really, just the craftsmanship.

(I really love the derpy face I gave Darien... )

My concept overall was basically, as I remember it, "Why can't Serena just have both?! She's a freaking Queen!". + Trashy romance novel.

That is all.

My first thoughts, are how the style is based on anime (in both pieces) and yet seems to be within its own style. For some, this means instant disaster, but I myself appreciate the style. However, for myself, such a comment seems irrelavant to the work.

The work itself, seems to describe lust, greed, and utter perversion (but then, I honestly believe this illustration is gonna be classed as some degree of hentai, so eh).

That statement comment with the more irrelavant one...

Your work leaves no flaws in concept. Your style remains relatively the same whilst doing anime, which gives it your own vibrant twist, but I feel it needs more attention. (Though being honest, I think it'll just come to you naturally).

And finally, your style itself is wonderous to look at. I hope my art will be as truly amazing to look at one day as yours is now.

Hmm... Interesting picture. I never really got the whole Sailor Starlights being transexuals idea. In the original manga they were women who dressed up in men's clothing, but Toei decided to make transexuals in the anime. It seems like they were asking for trouble for doing that because that's why several countries refused to carry it.

P.S. Goggles, did you hear about Toei planning to bring a refurbished Sailor Moon to the States? Personally, I think Sailor Moon needs a redub badly.
